Good Bed & Pillow Hygiene - How to Clean Your Bed

wallbed mattress, murphy wallbed mattressesIsn’t it funny that we spend almost a third of our life (if you’re getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep!) in our bed, yet keeping the bed clean is almost an afterthought, and definitely a chore!

Here are some tips to not only clean your bed, mattress and pillow, but also some recommended guidelines.

Pillow Cleaning Recommendations

While we sleep, our skin is renewing itself and we actually shed the most skin cells and oils during the night. All of this falls into our bed and pillow. Mites accumulate on your pillow and in your bed, but who actually taught you to clean your pillow? Well now is the time to start.

Depending on your pillow, you can take several steps. Check the care instructions on your pillow first.

  1. Fluff your pillow daily to help shake off dust mites and dust.
  2. Put your pillow in the dryer on a weekly basis on the hot setting for 10-15 minutes a week. Some materials may not handle this so test what will work best for your pillow (you may not be able to go as hot).
  3. Twice a year, wash your pillow in the washing machine to thoroughly clean it. Down and feather-filled pillows should be hand washed only. When you dry the pillow, you will want to ensure it is dried all the way through so set the dryer to moderate heat for an hour.
  4. Air out your pillow on the clothes line on warm sunny days, once a month is a good rule of thumb for this (depending on your seasons).
  5. Keep a second pillow liner underneath your pillow case so that you can wash both these layers regularly to keep your pillow cleaner.

Mattress Cleaning Recommendations

Cleaning your mattress is a more commonly known practice so here are some tips to make this easier and to add it to your routine.

  1. Keep a mattress liner on your mattress. This helps protect your mattress from dust, dead skin, oils and mites while also being something that you can remove and wash regularly too.
  2. Vacuum your mattress with the upholstery attachment. Be sure to get into any seams or crevices as well.
  3. Deodorize with baking soda. If you can, leave this in for at least a few hours up to 24 hours (plan it around an overnight trip) and then vacuum all the baking soda out of your mattress.
  4. Check for stains and spot treat any that you see (check mattress care instructions). Use an enzyme cleaner to clean any biological stains.
  5. Place an extra blanket layer under your sheets and over the mattress protector if you find that the mattress protector irritates or interrupts your sleep quality.
  6. Airing out your mattress every few months is a good idea, if you can move it into the sun. Also rotate it every 3 months to prevent lumps and unevenness from forming. Many mattresses have pillow tops and cannot be flipped so rotating is even more important.
