The right pair of sheets can turn a regular old bed into a stress-melting, dream-inspiring, just-five-more-minutes-in-the-morning haven of comfort and relaxation. A dreamy set of sheets is especially important if you are shopping for a new mobile bed or wallbed in your guestroom. Holiday guests typically expect starchy linens, so surprise your friends and family with a set of cozy bed sheets. Here are some tips to help you find the best bed sheets.
Look at the Thread Count
Thread count is most often used as the barometer of a sheet’s smoothness and durability. Generally, the higher the thread count, the smoother the sheet will be, and the more impressed your holiday guests will be when you tell them what they are sleeping on. However, thread count isn’t always a reliable measurement of quality. That’s why the type of cotton is just as important as the thread count.
Learn the Difference in Cotton Quality
Only movie villains sleep with silk sheets, so you’ll want to limit your search to cotton bed sheets—unless, of course, you consider your step-mother a villain. While shopping for cotton bed sheets, know that 100 percent Egyptian cotton is as good as you can get. Pima cotton, also known as Supima, is second best. Cotton sheets that are not labeled as either Egyptian or Supima are probably made using American upland cotton, a rougher, less expensive variety.
Feel Before You Buy
No matter what your budget or which room you are shopping for, when shopping for bed sheets, feel as much as you can of each sheet before you buy. You’ll be surprised to find that less expensive bed sheets can feel much softer than the more expensive varieties. When you find a pair of sheets that you like and you think your guests will enjoy, the only thing left to do is the make the bed.
