Legend has it, Murphy was courting an opera singer and wanted to entertain her at his home, which happened to be a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco.
Moral codes of ethics frowned upon a man entertaining a woman in his bedroom. Not to be stopped, Murphy created the fold-up bed, which turned his one-bedroom apartment into a parlor acceptable for entertaining.
