Combine a Home Office and a Bedroom? 3 Reasons the Hidden Bed is Great

Are you looking to purchase your next bedroom set? Rather than furnishing a home office and your bedroom, consider a hidden bed and desk unit.
hidden bed and desk
Here’s why:

1. Works in Any Room

At Wallbeds “n” More, you have the option of a twin, full, or queen size hidden bed and desk unit. These various sizes allow you to customize your hidden bed and desk for each member of your family. If your child needs a desk to work on homework, a twin disappearing bed is ideal for him or her. You can also turn your guest bedroom into a home office by purchasing the full or queen hidden bed and desk unit.

2. Allows You to Work from Home

If your space at home is limited, you don’t want to take up an entire room with a home office. Instead, quickly turn any bedroom into your office space with one of our hidden bed and desk units. This way, you can conveniently work at home as needed. If your children need additional space for homework or to work on a project, simply turn their bed into a sturdy desk for their studies.

3. Maximizes Your Space

Whether you have a full house of family members or you’re moving into your first apartment, you can always use more space. Investing in a Murphy bed with an accompanying desk unit allows you to maximize the space of your home. If you’re living in a one-bedroom home, a hidden bed and desk unit is ideal for sleeping at night and creating a more professional atmosphere during the day. The hidden bed and desk unit also saves you money, because you only need to purchase one piece of affordable furniture instead of two!

If you’re still unsure if a hidden bed is right for your home, visit Wallbeds “n” More, where you can lie down on one of our disappearing beds and view our full collection. Plan your in-store visit by calling us today at (888) 589-3084.

Face-Off: Murphy Wallbeds Crush Futon Beds

In Summary from our previous article Futon Bed vs Murphy Wallbed: Round 2, we are scoring the contestants as the best space-saving guest bed!

Main Purpose: To be a space-saving guest bed.

The futon can only fold away to the size of a couch when not used as a bed. A Murphy Wallbed folds up against the wall to take up approximately 17″ x 65″ of space. Winner: Murphy Wallbed

Secondary Purpose: To provide a comfortable night’s rest to your guests.

A futon is often lumpy (if the mattress is soft and folded up), or has cracks if it is two separate solid pieces of furniture. I have slept on both, and neither were desireable. A Murphy Wallbed provides your guests with a proper real mattress that offers the comfort of any other bed they would sleep in. Winner: Murphy Wallbed

Third Purpose: Day Use.

With a futon, you do have the use of a couch by day, but again, the question is whether it is comfortable with it’s lack of back support as either a soft, floppy mattress or a hard break apart mattress. With a Murphy Wallbed, you have the extra floor space available when your bed disappears, as well as storage beside the bed if you choose from a selection of side cabinet and desk options. Winner: Tie (when space is at a premium, the extra seating might be worth the pain)

Overall Winner: Murphy Wallbed

(We may be slightly biased but in the end all of our points are valid!)

What do you think? What’s the best or worst guest bed you’ve slept on?

Sex sells futon beds, Murphy Wallbeds are better beds

Look! Sex must be what sells futon beds because that is one saggy bed otherwise!

Points to Consider When Choosing between Wallbeds and Air Mattresses

When you are trying to make the most of a small space, yet still need functional pieces of furniture for hosting guests, you may be trying to make a decision between a wallbed and an air mattress. When you are trying to decide between these two options, make sure to consider the following:

Comfort

Although air mattresses can be set up in a matter of minutes, they also do not provide the highest level of comfort. A wallbed, however, is comprised of a cozy mattress that acts as a permanent bed rather than an inflatable, temporary bed.

Space

Both an air mattress and a wallbed are great options for saving space. A wallbed, however, blends in beautifully with the décor in your home, and can add to the aesthetic appeal of the entire room while saving you significant amounts of space.

Durability

Air mattresses can easily be popped or lose their air, which can cause an uncomfortable sleeping situation. This also presents the nuisance of buying several different mattresses throughout the course of time for your guests. Wallbeds, on the other hand, do not deflate or lose air, because they feature real mattresses, just like a normal bed.

Guests

Would you rather have your guests set up on a real bed or on an air mattress on the floor? Consider the comfort of your guests and the impression you make on them. Make your guests feel welcome with a relaxing wallbed in a guest room designed to be a home away from home.

Futon Bed vs Murphy Wallbed: Round 2

Futon beds are a great space-saving piece of furniture – if you need a quick, inexpensive sleeping solution that ensures your guests never want return!

Just like a wallbed, a futon acts as a space-saving guest bed that can fold away during the day, however, not all beds are created equal and as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.

  1. You can’t disguise a futon as anything other than what it is. You can add throw pillows or slip covers to your futon, but the bits of frame that poke through will still announce the presence of a futon. If you’re looking for an attractive piece of furniture to augment your home decor, this isn’t it. Our wallbeds are designed to look like an attractive wooden closet or cabinet when folded away. We even have custom and semi-custom options to allow you create the exact look that you want.
  2. Futons also don’t have any mechanisms to help you fold or unfold its frame. You must move the heavy frame and mattress with muscle power only. Full or queen-sized futons may require more than one person to unfold (and still manage to fall with a resounding boom – not ideal if you’re trying to go to bed quietly). Our wallbeds come with pistons so that one person can easily raise or lower a bed. They are balancedand completely safe so that there is no concern for the bed ever raising or falling.
  3. Futons are often close to the ground when converted into a bed. That’s good if you’re worried about a child falling off at night, but less ideal if you’re housing someone elderly. If your guest has knee problems or low blood pressure, they might have trouble getting up from their bed. Our Murphy Wallbeds sit at a normal bed height so that you do not trouble lowering yourself into bed,
  4. Because futons are folded up most of the day, the mattresses often crease permanently along the folds, forming uncomfortable seams. Whichever way you sleep on it, you’ll be able to feel it. Our Murphy Wallbeds fit a full-sized, normal mattress in them. It is a real bed!
  5. In argument to this, some futons now come in two solid, separate pieces that fold up to make a chair or flat to make a bed. They still don’t have the comfort of a real mattess. Try a futon out at your local Target storeThese beds still have a crease down the middle where the two sides of the mattress meet, our wallbeds have one complete, real mattress.
  6. In addition to the inadequate mattress, futon frames also provide bad support because the mattress usually sits right on top of a wood or metal frame. The frame has gaps to allow the futon to fold up – incidentally right where creases in the mattress are – which makes the contraption even less pleasant to sleep on.
  7. Finally, futons aren’t really designed to be permanent pieces of furniture. Not only are they unattractive, they are also fragile. After a few years, the integrity of your futon frame begins to fail. The slats of your wooden frame might become brittle and snap like toothpicks if stepped on. Don’t even think about jumping on this bed; just lie down very carefully and try not to move too much! In contrast, our wallbeds are made of furniture grade plywood, which is seven layers of solid wood laid in a cross-grain pattern for extra durability.

All in all, futons are a temporary solution to your guestbed problem, but they are uncomfortable either as beds or sofas. If you are ready for an elegant piece of furniture that doubles as a bed, you may want to consider a wallbed.

Stay Tuned for the final summary of this fight of the futon bed vs. the Murphy Wallbed as the best space saving guest bed.

Christmas Aftermath: How to Stow Your Ornaments for Next Year

January is here, and so is the hardest part of winter. Holidays at the end of each year help us remain happy and festive as the cold, rain and long dark days arrive. This season starts with Halloween, with its bright orange and fall colors, then proceeds right into Thanksgiving and then Hannukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and New Year’s Eve. A large part of this festive feeling is from the holiday decorations that can be found everywhere.

Bring in 2012 - Store your christmas decorationsOrnaments and wreaths and lights are wonderful additions to your home during the holidays, but what do you do with them afterwards? If you’re like my family, we try to delay putting away the decorations as long as possible; that brightly decorated and lit Christmas tree is so nice to come home to after a day at work. A general rule of thumb is that decorations come down on the weekend after New Year’s Day, otherwise you are just dragging it out. Our decorations came down today. What about you? When did you take yours down?

Packing Away Christmas Items

With a little planning and organization, you can store all your holiday decor so that you can unpack them easily next year. No more broken ornaments and tangled strings of lights!

Your storage needs depends on what kind of ornaments you’re storing and where you’re storing them. If you have fragile ornaments, you’ll need sturdy boxes to put them in. If you’re storing your ornaments in a damp space or are worried about insects, you’ll need something airtight to keep them safe and dry.

Ornaments

  • Ornaments come in all shapes and sizes, so storing them can be difficult. Sorting your ornaments by size and shape can help you pack more efficiently and save space.
  • If you have flat ornaments, stack them together with layers of tissue in between.
  • Small, round ornaments may be stored in empty egg cartons.
  • Larger round ornaments can be stored in their original packaging or in special divided boxes (see below). If your ornaments are fragile, be sure to wrap them up in plenty of tissue paper or bubble wrap and pack the box loosely.
  • Label your boxes on top and on at least two sides, so you can see it however you store the box. If the contents are fragile, label the box as such and be sure to put it on top of a stack.

Wreaths
You can store wreaths in boxes, or buy specialized boxes (see below) for them. If you have a spare closet, you can also hang your wreaths up to keep them from getting flattened in storage.

Lights
Wrap your Christmas lights around something to keep them from being tangled. You can use a special spool or even a rolled-up newspaper. Be sure to keep spare bulbs with the lights so you don’t lose them. If you have many strings of lights for different purposes, be sure to label each string so you don’t have to sort them out again next year.

Specialized Christmas Storage Boxes
If you want to invest in some specialized storage boxes, there are plenty of options. You can get a divided cardboard box for round ornaments, airtight plastic boxes for fragile or perishable ornaments, or even wreath-shaped containers. Check out these specialized storage solutions:

Why Choose a Wallbed? Limited Space, For A Guestroom, etc

When you are trying to choose furniture for your new home, you should take into consideration the purpose and functionality of the furniture. If you are trying to make the most of your living space while increasing the aesthetic appeal of your home, consider a wallbed for the following purposes:

Limited Space

Whether you live in a small studio apartment or are trying to make the best use of a small room, a wallbed is a perfect way to save space. If you want to create a more open living environment with more floor space, install a wallbed, which folds up into an attractive wall piece that blends beautifully into your room. If you live in a studio, you may want to choose a hidden bed, which offers both a desk and a bed in one space-saving unit.

Guestroom

Add a wallbed to your apartment to make the most of your limited floor spaceEntertaining guests can be stressful at times, especially when you are dealing with a limited amount of space. However, that shouldn’t stop you from hosting friends and family. Let a wallbed provide you with the perfect solution. Transform any room, even your living room, into a functional bedroom that will please your guests and relieve your worries.

Many pieces of furniture can end up being used for aesthetic reasons only and are put to little use. A wallbed, however, is an attractive addition to your home. A Murphy bed not only discretely hides an extra bed, but also offers plenty of storage space that can help you keep your home organized and well-maintained.
